Doe Run Peru Confirms Substantial Improvement in La Oroya's Air Quality

Airborne lead levels reduced by more than 61 percent

$157 million to date invested in environmental projects

La Oroya, February 26, 2008 – Doe Run Peru has confirmed prior reports on the results of air quality monitoring in La Oroya, which have registered substantial improvements after 11 years in operation.

The company reported that airborne lead levels in La Oroya have been reduced by 61 percent over the last few years. In 2006, environmental monitoring stations measured airborne lead levels at 2.08 ug/m3; by the end of 2007, the monitoring stations registered an annual lead average of 0.796 ug/m3, a 61.7 percent reduction.

“This is a very significant improvement indicating a new trend in La Oroya environmental indicators,” said José Mogrovejo, Doe Run Peru's vice president for environmental affairs. Mogrovejo added that “our efforts are now directed at achieving further improvements and attaining a progressive reduction in this index.”

Mogrovejo noted that Doe Run Peru’s initial investment commitment in environmental projects in La Oroya was $107.5 million; to date, the company has invested more than $157 million to improving the environment and community of La Oroya.

By the time Doe Run Peru completes its environmental operating agreement with the Peruvian government (known by its Spanish acronym, PAMA)in October 2009, the company will have invested $244 million, more than twice the sum originally undertaken.
