Doe Run Peru Supports La Oroya - Huancayo Road Clearing Following Landslide

Doe Run Peru staff clear the main access road on the Carretera Central Highway

La Oroya, February 25, 2008 – A Doe Run Peru rescue team successfully completed clearing the Carretera Central Highway yesterday, after a major landslide blocked access on the road.

Workers cleared enormous masses of mud and rocks near the district of Chacapalpa, which obstructed about 50 meters of the La Oroya-Huancayo road, impeding the regular flow of inter-provincial buses and transport vehicles.

Doe Run Peru acted immediately upon learning of the incident, promptly sending a rescue team to the area. With the support of a CAT 950G EPL-276 front loader, the team managed to free the road of the debris, thus allowing traffic to flow in both directions and opening the way for a large number of vehicles and hundreds of stranded passengers that had been held up for hours along a stretch of more than two kilometers of the Carretera Central Highway.

Doe Run Peru staff spent seven hours clearing the road with specialized equipment and the support of the highway police. The staff removed a truck trapped and almost entirely buried in the rubble, along with a total of 400 cubic meters of material. No loss of life was reported.

Doe Run Peru’s ongoing contribution to community service, including providing immediate relief in the face of disaster, highlights the company’s deep commitment to Peru and its people. Doe Run Peru has rallied on several occasions to assist the community, including during the 2008 earthquake, which devastated the Inca region. The company’s rescue equipment played a considerable role in removing debris and clearing roads, an effort which received recognition from local authorities.
